I dread the question, “What’s your favorite book?” because for me it’s always changing. It’s often something I’ve read recently because it’s fresh in my mind and something about it surprised me. But one novel that has been on my favorite books list for decades, and probably always will be, is Her First American, by Lore Segal. It continues to delight on each re-reading. I was glad to run across The Journal I Did Not Keep in Porter Square Books recently (bought it, but haven’t read it yet) and even more glad to find this review by Hannah Gerson, who I met at Vermont Studio Center some years ago.

I still have a lot of curiosity, and a lot of celebration to do. It’s a lucky life.
