Moby Dick in under 3 1/2 hours!

An astonishing, delightful, and moving adaptation of Moby Dick kept me fascinated for nearly three and a half hours at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, MA the other night. The set and props range from the elegant to the primitive. Having read the novel twice, I was so impressed by the ability of the team to capture its essence with humor and emotional depth. Marvelously, one of the most boring sections of the book–the one on cetology–is one of the most entertaining segments of the show, with performers dancing about in costumes and carrying signs that look as though they might have been made by middle-schoolers! This production also brought home to me what theater can do that CANNOT be done in film or a book–the final chapters of the book are played out simultaneously for us in different segments of the stage.
