This posting from Literary Ladies is about Virginia Woolf, but I find myself thinking about Tillie Olsen. I think they were from the same era–perhaps Olsen was a little younger. But of very different economic classes. I don’t think that Woolf was saying the working-class women weren’t smart enough or sensitive enough to write–she was simply pointing out that the combined economic and social factors made writing very difficult for women who didn’t have the money to find the space and time to write.
